Vaccines are considered the most important medical breakthrough of the past century and save millions of lives. Yet vaccinating children has become a controversial issue with alleged links to autism, sudden infant death syndrome, and many other health problems. This controversy has lead a growing number of parents to question the value of vaccines, delaying, even refusing to have their children vaccinated. It is no wonder that this issue not only involves the consumer but also the drug companies that manufacture vaccines and the governmental agencies that regulate them.
As the debate and controversy continues, the CDC and other public health officials are concerned that a new generation of children will be at risk of deadly diseases if confidence in the safety of vaccines are lost and they don't receive recommended shots. In order to reduce these concerns, the CDC took measures and urged vaccine manufacturers to reduce or eliminate thimerosal (a type of mercury found in vaccines) from their vaccination preparation. By 2000, thimerosal was removed from all vaccines except the flu vaccine. The federal government also found the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, in the late 1980s, to build confidence in consumers and manufacturers by allowing awards to those children that have been injured by vaccines and by protectin vaccine manufacturers from being sued.

Thank goodness for the CDC. I feel safer about the vaccines in knowing they are eliminating products that are thought to be in question.
ReplyDeleteIn 1968, I had a neighbor who had Polio. I often wondered why he wasn't vaccinated for this horrible disease. My daughter was born in 1989 and I was diligent in seeing that her immunizations were up to date. But now I have some concerns since the controversy about the link to autism. In my mind, it could be possible. There are many people who are vaccinated for the flu, and as result contracted it. That is why I personally won't take the flu shot especially knowing that is has thimerosal.

ReplyDeleteI think there is a confused concept of cause and effect when it comes to vaccines. Just because the two things have a correlation does not mean they are in a cause and effect relationship. Over time i believe the long term studies will come in and prove weather or not there is a direct connection between the two. Unfortunately we must rely on the collective wisdom of science until then.

ReplyDeleteI don't understand where the controversy comes from. If these vaccinations are being injected into children, they should be 100% proven to be safe, or parents should at least know the potential of the risks. Toys that were laced with lead; ELIMINATED. Children’s food with salmonella; ELIMINATED. If there is even a chance that vaccinations cause abnormalities or harm, they should be withdrawn.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand that concept either.... Why are they trying to make the vaccines safer AFTER they have given it to millions of children? Shouldn't it be that way before? It makes it seem like they are using children as lab rats for trial and error! Outrageous!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think society has become too trusting of the medical community (especially FDA approval system). It is about time we took a positive role to help those not capable of questioning 'those in charge' of others' health and well-being.
ReplyDeleteIrrespective of receiving daily oral or future injectable depot therapies, these require health care visits for medication and monitoring of safety and response. If patients are treated early enough, before a lot of immune system damage has occurred, life expectancy is close to normal, as long as they remain on successful treatment. However, when patients stop therapy, virus rebounds to high levels in most patients, sometimes associated with severe illness because i have gone through this and even an increased risk of death. The aim of “cure”is ongoing but i still do believe my government made millions of ARV drugs instead of finding a cure. for ongoing therapy and monitoring. ARV alone cannot cure HIV as among the cells that are infected are very long-living CD4 memory cells and possibly other cells that act as long-term reservoirs. HIV can hide in these cells without being detected by the body’s immune system.
