Before we had vaccines, thousands of children were affected by childhood diseases. From measles, mumps, and whooping cough, and other diseases, they were left with disabilities such as deafness, blindness, brain damage and even death. According to the CDC, vaccines have drastically reduced these casualties.

Polio can progress to paralysis of the lower limbs and chest which can lead to death. What’s more, there is no cure for Polio. With the invention of the Polio vaccine, incidences of the disease has dropped to less than 10 cases per year. (According to the CDC and the Pan-American Health Org.) The risk of contracting Polio from receiving the vaccine is 1 in 1.5 million. Another example of what the vaccine has accomplished for us is the German measles vaccine. Before we started receiving the vaccination in 1969, around 20,000 babies were born with severe birth defects—heart disease, blindness, hearing loss, learning problems, and some were even lost to miscarriage. All this was due to the mother’s being exposed to the disease while pregnant.
According to the CDC, 40 – 50% of children under age 2 haven’t completed the recommended infant immunizations. Public health officials are worried that diseases that once were nearly wiped out are on the rise again. In 1962 before the measles vaccine was introduced, there were 500,000 cases reported (400 being fatal). In 1963 this number dropped to 1493. In 1989 the CDC reported seeing a rise in the number of measles cases, especially in Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas. There have been reports of children experiencing seizures and even permanent brain damage after receiving a pertussis vaccine. JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) studied the records of 38,000 children that got the vaccine and found no evidence to support these accusations. The accusations that the DTP vaccine is tied to sudden infant death syndrome, is unfounded according to the CDC. According to the National Academy of Sciences there is a possibility of some children having an anaphylaxis reaction to the following vaccines: diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis, measles-mumps-rubella. Also, some of the vaccines can actually cause the disease it was supposed to prevent. One of the big fears of vaccines is that they might be the cause of Autism. It’s mostly accredited to the mercury in some of the vaccines. They’ve shown over a 60% increase in the number of Autism cases. Dr. Bernadine Healy was the former head of the National Institute of Health. She believes that public health officials need to research these accusations further and find a solution. It's scary to see the consequences of not getting the shots, but it is still scary to think that your child might be that one child who has the bad reaction to the shot.

ReplyDeleteThe facts are present and history has shown the overall effectiveness of vaccinations. The only real issue i see is misinformation about vaccinations. But once the information is seen the only logical conclusion that can be made is GET YOUR CHILD VACCINATED!

ReplyDeleteWith autism on the increase it is a hard decision for some parents especially if they know someone with a child who has autism. As an educator I've seen first hand the increase in the number of children with autism. I agree that vaccinations don't cause autism but I'm wondering if the amount and schedule increases chances?
ReplyDeleteI don't knoe about anyone else, but I think as a parent there are SO many important decisions a parent has to make for their children. As a nurse, I have been taught the importance of vaccinations, as a chiropractic patient and researcher I have seen the research out there against getting vaccines. Hoe does a parent decide the best thing for their child. I work with special needs children and the numbers of autistic children we have has exploded. It's all well and good to tell parents to have their child vaccinated, but when you see the rise in autism on a daily basis you have to wonder about playing russian roulette with your own child's life.
ReplyDeleteThere are many reasons why a person may not get their children immunizations. I know that when I as young, they were still giving smallpox vaccines. My twin and I are the only ones in our family who did not get it. Why? Because according to the research then, we were allergic to something in the vaccine and had we received it, it would have killed us. With that being said, you have to wonder if maybe some people choose not to because they are worried that their children will be that whatever percent that has a fatal reaction
ReplyDeleteIrrespective of receiving daily oral or future injectable depot therapies, these require health care visits for medication and monitoring of safety and response. If patients are treated early enough, before a lot of immune system damage has occurred, life expectancy is close to normal, as long as they remain on successful treatment. However, when patients stop therapy, virus rebounds to high levels in most patients, sometimes associated with severe illness because i have gone through this and even an increased risk of death. The aim of “cure”is ongoing but i still do believe my government made millions of ARV drugs instead of finding a cure. for ongoing therapy and monitoring. ARV alone cannot cure HIV as among the cells that are infected are very long-living CD4 memory cells and possibly other cells that act as long-term reservoirs. HIV can hide in these cells without being detected by the body’s immune system.
